Twitter has been around for a few years now, but only recently have the words "twitter" and "tweets" crept (taken over) into mainstream media. Now I can't get away from them. Even my morning news anchors are telling me to "follow them", as if I should join their morning news show cult, and it seems everyone is rushing to twitter to find out what all the buzz is about - And project managers are joining like crazy. Run PM Run!
What IS all the buzz about? It depends on who you ask at this point because feelings are still mixed on it's usefulness to project managers. Some feel it will find its place, other's seem to think it's lacking a real connection.
Personally I'm finding it quite rewarding. I've connected with amazing authors, bloggers, industry leaders and gurus - amazing people I never would have thought I'd have this level of connection with. I send updates out - thoughts, links, responses to people I've met all over the world. I will say that you do need to manage your time or you'll spend your days lost in all the great stuff you'll inevitably find!
PMs are writing about twitter:
- Dave Garrett Why Project Managers Should Twitter
- Bob Tarne Twitter Me This
- Jerry Manas Twitter for Project Managers: What's the Buzz?
- Sreejith Kesavan Is Twitter doing any value addition to you?
- Trevor Roberts The Social Media Project Manager - A slide show
My recent post Project Management Hash Tags On Twitter needs an update, but I am waiting for a bit of wiki work before I publish it. I'm learning the PM community on twitter is self organizing. We're reaching out and trying to build it and I believe the "quiet roar" will become the run of the bulls (a stampede perhaps?) at some point, though who am I to predict?
Are you a PM using twitter - What are your thoughts? Are you a PM not using twitter for a particular reason - please share. Also, if you've seen any numbers, stats on twitter usage and project management - I'd love to hear from you!

Great stuff ...as usual Raven. Many thanks. Your links in the article are good and thanks for all the encouragement to Tweet - I'm now a reasonably regular Twitterer...

Hi, Raven --
I think there's two different things going on here. One is project managers connecting with each other via Twitter and sharing best practices/war stories/articles, etc. There's a great community building already and it will likely only grow.
The other is whether Twitter-style communication has application specifically for project teams as a means for communication. We've recently implemented a Twitter-like feature in our project management app (I work for LiquidPlanner) and it is a huge part of our project team communication (and for our users, too.) Mainly b/c the "tweets" tie directly into the work we're doing and are linked to the plan themselves. Bruce Henry wrote an article called "Taking a Twitter Approach to Project Management" about the broader benefit - you can find it on our blog.
Thanks for getting the conversation going!
Hi Raven,
Liz is exactly right in identifying the two different areas where twitter is impacting project management. The first (building community among PMs) is already happening through #pmot. The second (using twitter on projects) is particularly interesting. If it takes off, it will be a huge change from what exists now on most projects.
Charles Seybold's (CEO of LiquidPlanner) interview on ProjectShrink was particularly helpful to me in understanding how twitter-type conversations could help on a typical software project.
Perhaps I'll be able to convince my client to bring in LiquidPlanner to use as a trial. More likely is that I will be in that great mass of PMs forced to use SharePoint or other tools. For these project managers, it would be extremely helpful to have PM twitter "best practices" and/or guidelines set up to allow everyone to get the benefits.
Great post as usual, Raven! Look forward to continuing the conversation.
Alec
Ron - Thank you for your kind words. Yes, you are becoming quite the tweeter - good job!
-Raven
Liz, Alec - Interesting comments from you both! Thanks for the great discussion (Apologies for the late reply). Community building is definitely taking place now on twitter, we can see that taking place as Alec says through the use of the #PMOT tag, and project managers are reaching out to each other more each day.
I know there is interest in the use of twitter and tools, and am curious to see how this impacts the industry going forward. Having used instant messaging for multiple software releases in the past I can see how using twitter would be useful (especially if it's integrated to the application), but the character limitations make me wonder why folks wouldn't revert back to trusty old messenger?
Social media and project management - definitely an interesting time to BE a PM!
Thank you both for taking the time to leave your comments!

Hi!
I dont need to look back since I have already been branded as "Head of Anti-Tweet Wing".
So here we go, check out my "Anti-Tweet" Cartoon here: PM Karma - Sreejith
One of the shortcomings of many SAaS project management solutions is that there’s only one way into the data stream–via the particular web interface.
Allowing broadcasts into the PM data stream via open services like laconi.ca would greatly improve utility for those who have other preferences in micro-blogging tools.
Of course, this applies to more than just project “Chatter.” Creating a polymorphic interface to project data would reduce activation energy for time tracking, resource management, you name it.
I absolutely agree with you. Twitter is a great resource for project managers in many ways.
One, that I wrote about in a post (http://www.torstenkoerting.com/blog/), its a treasure box for pearls in project management. I did not find as much great stuff in project management since I am on twitter.
